History
he original Grigg Family Farms property was
purchased by Walter C. Grigg in 1937. The first agricultural operations at the farm were
as a dairy. As the Columbia Basin began to develop into the breadbasket of Wahington,
circle irrigated crops such as hay, sugar beets, potatoes, and sweet corn were added.
Lorin Grigg, Sr. worked to develop crops that would supply the rapidly growing processing
industry.
Lorin Jr. completed his formal education at Wahington State University in 1984, and then brought his agricultural degrees back home to the farm. Lorin Jr., his wife Gail and his sister Kelly all assist the operation, making Grigg & Sons a true family business.
Today, the farm consists of over 2,500 acres. They still grow potatoes, mint, and corn, but in the last several years they have wanted to add a product that they could have greater control over, including packaging, shipping and storage.
Lorin Jr. began looking into onions, carefully researching successful operations, paying close attention to all aspects of the commodity. In 1991 they planted a test crop and were excited about the results. So armed with good research and sound farming principles they dove into the onion market. Today they grow, store, pack and ship their own label - both here and abroad.
The future of Grigg & Sons is yet to be written, but the next generation is already spending a little time in the field. And as worldwide demand for quality onions grows, it's a good bet that more of those fields will have onions in them. |
